Sobering Museums

that this may be a sign among you when your children ask in time to come, saying, ‘What do these stones mean to you?’ Then you shall answer them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord; when it crossed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. And these stones shall be for a memorial to the children of Israel forever.”  Joshua 4:6-7 (NKJV)

The function of sobering museums, like the twelve stones, are to remind us from whence we have come. The streets and neighborhoods where we were raised are our sobering museums (our hood). They are where we became self-aware and set out to discover our place in the world.

Our hood is where we caught the first glimpse of the fantastically grand possibilities for our life.  And, regardless of how life turned out, every time we return to our hood we are reconnected to a time when conquering the world was a daily occurrence.

During the 1970s the street to the left was lined with houses filled with boys and girls coming into self-awareness. They played tag, hop-scotch and hide-and-go-seek after school and all-day during summer time.  They dreamed of a future where they would climb the tallest mountain, cross mighty oceans and live out every ounce of their God-given potential.   As you see there are no houses on St. Mary Street. The sobering museums for the kids who grew up on this street only exists in their unfaded memories. When our hood dies, a part of us die.

a dream deferred - by Langston Hughes

image79

What happens to a dream deferred?
Does it dry up
Like a raisin in the sun?

image80

Or fester like a sore--
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over--
like a syrupy sweet?

image81

Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.

Or does it explode?
